It can affect all the senses, or just one.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birth_defect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congenital abnormalities<\/a><\/em><\/strong> are another possible cause of sensory processing disorders. Sometimes, the disorders occur with<em> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/understanding-autism-different-doesnt-mean-inferior\/\">autism<\/a><\/strong><\/em> or <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/adhd\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">SPD triggers difficulty in organising and responding to information that comes through the senses. Children may be oversensitive to sensory input, under sensitive &#8211; or both. It is possible for a child to outgrow this disorder.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Symptoms include:<\/p><ul style=\"text-align: left;\"><li>clothing feeling too scratchy,<\/li><li>lights seeming too bright,<\/li><li>sounds seeming too loud,<\/li><li>soft touches feeling too hard,<\/li><li>food textures creating a gag reaction,<\/li><li>poor balance, or seeming clumsy,<\/li><li>afraid to play on swings.<\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1830\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Loud-Sound-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Loud-Sound-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Loud-Sound.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">To help a child with sensory processing disorder, establish what senses he\/she is looking to stimulate and instead of punishing him\/her for engaging in misplaced behaviour, redirect him\/her to another activity that stimulates that sense in a similar way. Explain your reasoning.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Five of the eight sensory systems have already been addressed.
