Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates your young child&#8217;s senses &#8211; touch, smell, taste, movement, balance, sight and hearing. Sensory activities allow exploration, and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore.<\/p><p>Here are a few sensory play ideas \u2013 there are many.<\/p><ul><li>Making \u2018mud pies\u2019 is an old favourite \u2013 the water and the earth provide an inviting sensual touch.<\/li><li>Hand and foot painting offer pictures for your child\u2019s bedroom wall \u2013 ensure you buy non-toxic, washable paint.<\/li><li>A sandpit and a few toys (bucket, spade, cars, blocks, cups) promise to keep you child busy for hours.<\/li><li>Everyone enjoys \u2018sculpturing\u2019 play dough \u2013 be creative.<\/li><li>A variety of foods with diverse flavours and textures can develop into a joyful challenge \u2013 hot, cold, sticky, dry, sweet, sour, bitter.<\/li><li>Sing and dance to your child\u2019s favourite tunes.<\/li><li>The carefree act of swinging will help your child\u2019s balance and coordination.<\/li><\/ul><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/sensory-play_child-swinging-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sensory play\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/sensory-play_child-swinging-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.capulumcollege.com\/dev2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/sensory-play_child-swinging.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain\u2019s pathways. This leads to the child\u2019s ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play also supports language development, intellectual growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. This type of play helps to develop and enhance the memory and helps to calm an anxious or frustrated child.<\/p><p>Sensory activities allow children to improve their levels for different sensory information, thereby helping their brains to create stronger connections to process and respond to sensory information. For example, a child may find it difficult to play appropriately with a peer when there are other things going on. Through sensory play a child learns to adapt to blocking out the \u2018other things\u2019 which are not important, and to focus on the play that is happening with his\/her
